Time Capsule.
Understanding time capsules as objects capable of concentrating within themselves an “air du temps,” as Duchamp expressed it, this work establishes a parallel with that concept through the reception of a gift: an infrared film roll, hermetically sealed in its original packaging and brought from San Francisco (USA) in 1978.
Receiving this token directly from Diana Mines and realizing that the roll has remained sealed for the same number of years that I have been alive leads me to understand the act of opening it.
I take part in an artistic residency in Berlin, where the idea for the work emerges.
I open the roll as a performative act in Berlin and load the camera with it.
I document this act on video as a testimony of the opening and of the handover of the object. Photographic records of the objects add to the work an almost archaeological archive of each element contained within the packaging, hidden until the moment of its discovery.
Why open the roll in Berlin? Because this is where the visibility of the queer universe began.
Later, now in Montevideo, I meet with Diana for an interview and record our conversation. I add a new layer to the video recording: Diana’s voice and her contribution to the narrative of the themes addressed by the work, based on the premise that all photographs may be possible or impossible. This will depend on whether they manage to obtain light and bring their stories to life, or whether they fail to do so and, in that case, encounter a living death through starvation, through lack of light.
